"Religion of peace" demands death for naming teddy bear Mohammed
Thousands of Sudanese, many carrying knives and sticks, have taken to the streets of Khartoum calling for the execution of British school teacher Gillian Gibbons, jailed over a teddy bear.

Crowds demonstrated outside the presidential palace, saying the 15-day prison sentence imposed on Mrs Gibbons for allowing her class to call a teddy bear Mohammed was too lenient.

The protesters streamed out of mosques after sermons, as pick-up trucks with loudspeakers blared messages against Mrs Gibbons, 54, from Liverpool.

Hundreds of riot police were deployed as demonstrators massed in central Martyrs Square, outside the palace.

"Shame, shame on the UK," protesters chanted, and they called for Mrs Gibbons' execution, saying, "No tolerance: Execution," and "Kill her, kill her by firing squad."

The women's prison where Gibbons is being held is far from the site, as is the Unity High School where she taught, which is under heavy security protection.

For my view, they are all whackjobs - the lot.

I heard a story on NPR in which they interviewed a Muslim journalist who grew up in Sudan and even attended that very same English school.

Key points that I recall...

1) That school has been fairly Western-oriented for a long time, because it was mainly the wealthy, educated business people, returning ex-pats and diplomats who could afford to send their children there. They had more exposure to the outside world, and were thus happy to have some Western culture as part of the atmosphere. But recently some conservative local Sudanese have been able to afford to send their children there, and these parents aren't as familiar with Western culture.

2) To a culture that has teddy bears, they are loved and admired, and get human names. To a culture that doesn't have this, telling someone that the name Mohammed was given to a bear is upsetting because it's a dirty, ferocious animal. They have no idea about what teddy bears mean to Westerners.

3) The journalist explained that she didn't take offense, and that she'd been asking her Muslim friends and family back home if they were offended. They were not. It's only the uneducated rabble that are getting upset, and the Sudanese government is responding to that group.

I'm Atheist like you, but I don't see Islam as being any better or worse than Christianity. There are all different flavors of followers-- Some educated and sane, some uneducated and batshit. It's just that in a poor country like Sudan, the majority of people are uneducated and more prone to crazy reactions.

If a Hispanic family moved into white trash trailer park in America and named their kid Jesus ("hay-soos") the uneducated, backward-thinking Christians around there would probably call for blood, too.
