A puppy would never do that!

That sounds very dubious to me. It sounds more like a case of parents on something trying to cover up their own cruelty.

I just think there's more to the story than we known from the article.

Like what substance the parents had been imbibing in when they were passed out, and why the hell they thought getting a puppy was a good idea.

And how they didn't hear a baby right beside them crying in pain for the entire time it would have taken the puppy to chew the toes off.

Yeah. Infant screaming bloody murder the entire time pup thought tootsies = chew toy w/o the parents waking up?

I love how some breedist assholes have been shouting about how this story is "proof" that pit bulls are cold-blooded killers from BIRTH.

Well, I'm still not convinced it's the puppy that did it, based on what I read in the linked article.

And I'm not an expert, but don't pit bulls have to be trained to be aggressive, and don't they have to be much older than six weeks before they can be so trained?

I'm also not convinced that the child wasn't also somehow drugged up. It's not uncommon for drug-addicted parents to drug a child up while they crash so the kid won't bother them. Vile, but true.

The puppy was doing what puppies do. I've had one suck/chew my fingers raw just being affectionate. I think it's so sad that those people thought they were in any way fit to be responsible for another life of any species.

Pit bulls have been historically bred to be dog-aggressive but never ever ever human aggressive. A properly bred pit will have a propensity to fight with other dogs but should never ever bite a human. There isn't much sense having a fighting dog that'll turn on it's master. That said, there is currently a saturation of ill-bred, raised, and trained pits and pit mixes that are not true to breed, so you end up with a dog that physically looks like a pit, but it nothing like one mentally.

Most pits are often capable of normal interactions with other dogs up until they reach sexual maturity, usually around 1-2 years old. After that, without a great deal of training and supervision, for their health and safety they should not be left with other dogs unsupervised for any length of time, no matter how short. A 6 week old puppy is completely and totally incapable of aggression of any sort, just as a month old infant is completely and totally incapable of spiteful actions.

Most "training" to be human aggressive is abuse, plain and simple. Some dogs end up with a propensity towards being human aggressive from poor breeding, but there is almost always a "nurture" component to it.

A puppy won't strangle you, it'll just gnaw off 4 of your toes if your parents are negligent assholes who leave their month-old newborn and 6 week old puppy alone unsupervised, who can't hear their baby crying *right next to them* for over an hour. *eyeroll*

Side note, what kind of crazy person decides that getting a puppy and an infant at the same time is a good idea?
