British Break With Bush Over Israel

Breaking ranks with the U.S. for the first time, the U.K.’s foreign minister publicly criticized Israel’s military tactics and urged America to “understand” the price being paid by ordinary Lebanese civilians.

The Observer:

Britain dramatically broke ranks with George Bush last night over the Lebanon crisis, publicly criticising Israel’s military tactics and urging America to ‘understand’ the price being paid by ordinary Lebanese civilians.

The remarks, made in Beirut by the Foreign Office minister, Kim Howells, were the first public criticism by this country of Israel’s military campaign, and

placed it at odds with Washington’s strong support. The Observer can also reveal that Tony Blair voiced deep concern about the escalating violence during a private telephone conversation with the Israeli Prime Minister, Ehud Olmert, last week. But sources close to Blair said Olmert had replied that Israel faced a dire security threat from the Hizbollah militia and was determined to do everything necessary to defeat it.

Okay, that's all fine and good, and I don't disagree - take a look at my posts thus far on this issue - but is there the equal fervor over the countless murders of innocent Israelis by Islamic militants, because those numbers are far greater over a longer period of time when you get down to it. I'm just sayin'.

They have just as much innocent blood on their hands as the Arabs do.

So you're going to look back 70 years to justify their present immorality?

Why don't we just crucify the Germans with that mentality - as clearly they were involved in the holocaust.

Or White America for its treatment of the Chinese, Blacks, and other minority groups.

Or the Spaniards and/or Catholics because of the inquisition.

I mean, seriously, as an individual you are judged for the things that you do in your lifetime. The whole "sins of the father" isn't a fair metric. At all.

I think your penultimate sentence is incorrect. There's a 10:1 Arab deaths:Israeli deaths rule that is often quoted in International Relations and Middle East Studies, which holds up pretty well over all of the ME conflicts since WWII -- take a look at the casualties for the 67 or 73 wars, for example.
