Poll Time: Religion, Faith, & 9/11

Okay, this struck me as particularly interesting. I have read Sam Harris' book The End Of Faith: Religion, Terror, and the Future of Reason and found much of it very illuminating, confirming things I'd long suspected and reaffirming my existing beliefs. Read this interview with Mr. Harris on TruthDig. Read also his Atheist Manifesto, and decide for yourself how you feel about him and the subject matter.

I'm an atheist. I decided that defaulting to Agnosticism was being rather noncommittal, which didn't suit me, and in the course of much theologic, sociologic and philosophic study decided I was in every way imaginable a nonbeliever. I'm a true minority in this realm, which is fine with me. I don't have the need to fit into the majority to feel validated, just because something is common certainly does not make it normal - the same applies to heterosexuality, for that matter.

I found it very interesting that Harris began writing the book within hours of 9/11, and it set me back to a set of theories I've written about before but never in a venue like this. I know that many of the people reading this are faithful, many unshakably, unquestionably devout. Some are atheists like myself, some nihilists, some who simply do not care and default to agnostic. In either case, did the events set in motion by 9/11 have an effect on what you believe religiously? I know people who infuriated me by saying it was all a part of God's plan, and some who told me in ways that broke my heart for them that God ceased to exist for them after 9/11, that it was impossible for them to believe in light of what we all saw happen that day - let alone the daily instances of injustice and suffering that would call an omnipotent deity's power into question.

So given all of this, I have made a poll, open to all so everyone feel free to join in. Fill in your own answers, and please stick to the ones that apply to you specifically. Comment if you need to elaborate even more or add other thoughs/opinions/feelings/questions etc. You are allowed a limited number of words, so if you must, comment with your answers. And link to this post if you like, that way more people can fill out the poll - you don't have to be on my friends list in order for me to be interested in your answers.

Poll #765143 Religion, Faith, & 9/11

Did 9/11 have any positive affect on your feelings/beliefs about religion?

Did 9/11 have any negative affect on your feelings/beliefs about religion?

If you are a person of faith, what do you make of the events of 9/11 and the terrorist acts made in the name of God?

If you are a nonbeliever, why do you think people are able to continue believing in God in the wake of a tragedy the scale of 9/11?

If you are a person of faith, what in your opinion are the reasons why atheists do not believe?

If you are a nonbeliever, can you prove there is no such thing as God?

If you are a person of faith, can you prove there is such a thing as God?
