Excuse me, kettle, but you're black as hell.

Few things bring me a greater sense of joy than when hypocrisy is exposed, especially when it is hypocrisy of the Republican flavor - that flavor admittedly being mostly boring, bland and bordering on bitter. Alliteration aside, a few things went down this afternoon that brought a smile to my face.

The first was when Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid did the Jedi mind trick (Reid Demands Answers, Accountability) on the floor calling for a closed session. See also Why Reid did what he did. Then predictably, the GOP flips out.
The unexpected shutdown immediately provoked a furious reaction from Senate Republicans, who denounced it as a stunt and an affront.

Frist angrily denounced the move, charging that "the United States Senate has been hijacked by the Democratic leadership." He told reporters that he has never as majority leader "been slapped in the face with such an affront to the leadership of this grand institution."

Frist called the closed session "a pure stunt" by Reid, Durbin and the Democratic leadership.

"This is an affront to me personally," he said. "It's an affront to our leadership. It's an affront to the United States of America. And it is wrong."

Frist sharply criticized Reid personally, saying he could never trust the Democratic leader again.

Alrighty then, fuckstick. I'll play your game. You may be a surgeon, but I'm dissecting this one.

For starters, YOU Bill Frist do not get to use phrases like "the United States Senate has been hijacked by the Democratic leadership" in light of your own party's well documented self whoring to the religious reich. Consider this before you go on about a political party that has been hijacked.

Between yourself and Tom DeLay alone, you have enough shit on your hands in the way of your own respective scandals and ethics violations that you need not say things like "I have never been slapped in the face with such an affront to the leadership of this grand institution" or for that matter use words like "trust", but I'm loving that you stand in front of the cameras and give your best outraged grandstanding and empty posturing. Don't worry about whether or not you can trust Harry Reid, you need to worry about the dogs in your own kennel that are biting you in your overindulged ass!

A "pure stunt" on behalf of the Reid-led Democrats? Um, WTF? YOU, of all people, GOP Senate Majority Leader trying to call out a "pure stunt"?

Keep shooting yourself in the foot, Bill. Eventually you'll make it up to your temple.

C&L has video up of both the Senate shutdown and Frist's reaction and Reid's press conference.

Okay, I've got miles of homework to go before I sleep, so instead of taking time I don't have to go look up the answer, I'm a-gonna ask: What's a closed session?
2nd-Nov-2005 02:20 am (UTC)
Essentially, it's Rule 21 which requires everyone but senators and a few aides to clear the chamber until a majority votes to reopen it.
2nd-Nov-2005 02:38 am (UTC)
Okay, but why is it pissing off the GOP?
2nd-Nov-2005 02:41 am (UTC)
Because he surprised them with it. Had he pushed any other way for accountability, Frist would have steamrolled all over it for another year. They're also pissed because it wasn't their turn to employ the rule.
2nd-Nov-2005 03:08 am (UTC)
...No, wait, I still don't get it. How does closing the chamber push for accountability?
2nd-Nov-2005 03:14 am (UTC)
It's more of a ball squeeze when you get down to it, it places restrictions and prevents outside contacts and informants from entering the chamber to lend influence. Consider how upset Bush would be without Rove's hand up his ass operating him all the time, that's about it.
2nd-Nov-2005 05:44 pm (UTC) - Closed Session
Doesn't Closed Session also lock out Senators who are not in the chamber? Providing that there is quorum? Until a majority vote to move into open session? Or am I using Texas Senate Rules?
2nd-Nov-2005 06:04 pm (UTC) - Re: Closed Session
Excellent question, I am not 100% sure but I'm inclined to think that is exclusive to TX.
2nd-Nov-2005 06:28 am (UTC) - Heh
Neocons, Republicans ane Liberterians were all frothing at the mouth in #politics when this happened. It's so nutso. They REALLY do all want a single party system I think. Which is funny to me, because that's just so commie :P
2nd-Nov-2005 03:41 am (UTC)
Did you see Cheney's proposal to let the CIA be exempt from laws regarding not allowing torture?

I'm getting to a point with this administration that I just want to shut down, tune it all out, but I don't. It's like this sick nightmare parody of the nation I thought I grew up in.
2nd-Nov-2005 04:51 am (UTC)
Glimpsed it on Reuters or Google News, will read in the AM.
2nd-Nov-2005 06:27 am (UTC) - yep
If McCain's ammendent won't get through the conference committee as is, three Senators on that comittee voted against it. Unfortunate :(
2nd-Nov-2005 03:59 am (UTC)
he is a first-class ass, but his name is "frist", not "first". :)
2nd-Nov-2005 04:50 am (UTC)
Fuckin' WaPo...
2nd-Nov-2005 05:18 am (UTC)
Reid is my senator. I love him lots and lots and lots...mostly.
3rd-Nov-2005 01:36 pm (UTC)
Mostly being the keyword, lol!
3rd-Nov-2005 06:00 pm (UTC)
Well, his pro-life stances is not a fav of mine. Plus he cannot have a speech without mentioning Searchlight, NV. But he is friendly enough if more conservative than I like my demmies.
2nd-Nov-2005 05:18 am (UTC)
Thank you for another brilliant post.

Especially since Frist apparently sold his HCA through insider trading knowledge.

Let's also not forget Frist's hijacking of the Senate to take up the Terri Schiavo cause. A braindead woman who he said was brain-alive by looking at her on videotape.
2nd-Nov-2005 04:07 pm (UTC)
Absolutely - follow the links in the post, young grasshopper... ;-)
2nd-Nov-2005 04:13 pm (UTC)
I wish more people would continue to bring up the Terri Schiavo debacle.
3rd-Nov-2005 01:37 pm (UTC)
I know, it's funny how quickly things get forgotten.
