That's MISTER Faggot to you...

If you never read another post in my journal, please read this one in its entirety.

They say if you are not outraged, then you are not paying attention. I for one am outraged, and if you have a single nerve capable of firing off any common sense whatsoever, you should be as well. At the end of this post you'll find code that you can use to link back. I want all of LiveJournal and then some reading this, your effort in spreading this around will be appreciated greatly. If you come across any links or organizations that should be included, reply with them. Thank you in advance for reading.

"First they came for the Communists, but I was not a Communist - so I said nothing.
Then they came for the Social Democrats, but I was not a Social Democrat - so I did nothing.
Then came the trade unionists, but I was not a trade unionist - so I did nothing.
And then they came for the Jews, but I was not a Jew - so I did nothing.
Then when they came for me, there was no one left who could stand up for me.

- Martin Niemöller
We are living in a time of extremist war against us all. What you think could never happen in this country IS happening, while the majority of us live our lives as if we are not affected and nothing will break our safe, comfortable little bubbles. We like to live as though nothing will ever be bad enough to really come in and destroy us, which is such an American trait, and take no notice of those who try relentlessly to do just that. To quote former U.S. Senator Barry Goldwater: "A government that is big enough to give you all you want is big enough to take it all away." Our government and the current administration throws out catchphrases like "freedom" and "democracy", "right to live" and "judicial tyranny", and gems like "defending our homes and families from fanatical, fundamentalist terrorism" almost on a daily basis - and has the nerve to ignore the fact that it has been the victim of the same kind of malevolent hypocrisy. We are living under the reign of Fundamentalist Christian terrorism, and we do nothing to stop it - least of all change the way we think about ourselves and use our voices in dissention. During this Pride Month, use your minds and your voices and be the change you wish to see in the world.

Propaganda is and has always been a dangerous tool, especially when it is being used in the name of God. When God and the Bible (and the Quran, and the Book of Mormon) are being used as a club to beat people with, justice is raped and fairness ceases to exist. No one has the right to decide anything for you unless you make that choice for yourself to allow such a thing. I am never going to stand for anyone dictating what is or is not appropriate for me, least of all someone who appoints themselves as a spokesperson for an imaginary sky fairy I don't even believe exists.

So to all of you, likeminded people and not - gay, straight, faithful, faithless, questioning, whatever - understand something. I am an American, goddamnit. A big gay one. I need no one's approval or permission to be who I am, and that includes loving intensely, fucking passionately, or saying whatever the bloody fuck I feel like saying. If you don't like it, seek therapy. I support your right to say whatever misguided, rhetorical bullshit you want to say, but do not think for a single second that any of it is taken seriously. And I encourage anyone that listens to you to do the same, because the truth is you speak for no one but yourselves and if there really were any such thing as God then you are all completely fucked.

What you think could never happen IS happening. The same type of speech that Hitler used against the Jews is and always has been used against GLBT people by The Religious Reich. From the fringe to the mainstream, we're going to cover all of these wingnuts and I'm going to get your brain integrated with them all personally before they take over and we are all forced to live in a Margaret Atwood novel.

The Fringe Fundies
I suppose I'll start off with possibly the most notorious of them all, the Reverend and ceremoniously disbarred former attorney Fred Phelps. It all started years ago, but hit the media full on when he and his cult picketed Matthew Shepard's funeral. Since then, there's even been a film documentary made about him, aptly titled Hatemongers. According to Phelps' official site(s), God Hates Fags. He also hates America. And Canada. And Sweden. But then apparently he also hates figs. And shrimp. And homophobes. As far as God hating fags, a literal reading of Genesis 19 proves otherwise. No one asked Jesus what he hated, but I found it anyway. See? I go the extra mile. Here's an interview with Benjamin Phelps, who designs all of the family's websites. They're frequently monitored by one of my favorite websites, Baptist Watch.

I learned a lot about these people from Hatecrime. You can change their website so that all of the hate speech changes from using the word "gay" to using the words "Jews/Jewish" and "Blacks". Nice perspective.

Then we have Repent America. And let's not forget the Army of God. It's a pretty long list, so I'll just post the links in list form:

I got very angry yesterday seeing the media pile on Howard Dean for speaking the truth about these christianists. Please note the Democrat party's lurch toward social conservatism.

Ugh - yeah, that spiked my BP as well.

I'm not the biggest fan of Act-Up's methodology, even though I do think it is necessary sometimes.

Here's a good start - low hanging fruit, as it were. Dawn Eden, a self-described Jewish Christian, every now and again posts carefully worded anti-gay stuff in her blog. She's careful, but her cronies are not.

See the post from Monday, June 6, here: http://www.dawneden.com/blogger.html

Check the comments section for a dialogue between 'joe' and "Colleen". joe criticizes the Bush administration for being anti-gay, and Colleen goes nuts, sounding like the uptight orgasm-free gay basher she is. joe systematically has her for lunch on theological and civil rights issues pertaining to gays.

Send Dawn an email with your thoughts to dawn@dawneden.com

I loved that thread, it was quite entertaining when I read it the other day - I'll bet gravity has done its part to make it even heavier.

psst, you've got focus on the family linked twice :)

and to me, what's most personally heartbreaking? the guy in the picture holding up those two signs? wearing a ymca tank top. i went to and worked at summer sleepaway camps for the berkeley-albany ymca for eleven years, and everyone i ever worked with there would be as offended and saddened as i am to see somebody associated with the y espousing such narrow-minded views.

granted, when i moved out of berkeley, i quickly realized that to the rest of the country, the y was essentially a cheap gym, and not much else. which is equally depressing, because in those eleven summers i learned a hell of a lot more about my own spirituality and of non-christian-specific beliefs and practices than i ever did in a decade of belonging to the catholic church.

Fixed, thanks!

Amazing what unclouded life experience does for a person to think for themselves, eh?

Before checking the link, I thought that was a the Christian Exodus, which I fully support.

Thanks so much for this. You da man.
8th-Jun-2005 05:28 pm (UTC) - No problem
Not a problem...Just another "Axis of Evil" against the GLBT community.

If you wanna be added to my LJ Friends, let me know. I do post a lot of mindless b/s, but if you are interested, just say so.

I am so torn by this all
I've spent my whole life being told what is right..I wanted to believe it so bad, it was all I knew. I believed that these feelings were just a temptation to go down the wrong path. What I was feeling was just that...a feeling. I simply had to choose to do the right thing.
I was raised Assemblies of God...that's right...Jimmy Swaggart...Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker...Fire and Brimstone..speaking in tongues, burning worldly music..trying to be more christlike..
I slowly merge that into a more tolerant "living by example..judging no one"belief that still held on to the core values I'd been taught....

Now, here I am...I climbed the fence and fell down the other side..no way to get back.

I was never one to judge others or condemn...I just did myself what I thought to be right. I never believed I had the right or power to tell you how to live your life..

I don't know what I am trying to say..it just makes my head spin....seeing it all from both sides now....it seems so obvious what is right..but for so long I just sat back and let others tell me what was right...now...I dunno...I just look at the hatred with a slack jaw and wonder how could I have possibly ever agreed with that,,,,,,

It doesn't matter anymore, A - you're a product of all those things and you might not be you without them. Remember, it doesn't matter what's happened up until now - all that matter is what's left to be done, and that is getting your life where you want it to be.

They can bark morning, noon, and night on how you should live, but they cannot manage to live by the same principles. Consider that before wondering why anyone would take them seriously!

I have been living in fear of "the handmaid's Tale" coming to life.. and these days I feel it more and more.
8th-Jun-2005 05:41 pm (UTC)
Exactly, hence the Margaret Atwood reference.

Ironically, I dined with the current president of Exodus International, Alan Chambers, 10 years ago when I was participating an Orlando-area ex-gay ministry. I was 23 at the time, and unhappy with the many elements of "gay" culture I had encountered after "coming out", so Exodus was very seductive. Anyway, I started attending support group meetings, and seeing a "Christian" counselor in a misguided attempt to convert myself. Two things made me run as far away as I could from that group: the obvious, deep unhappiness of all of the other participants, and the flimsy "reparative therapy" approaches the counselor tried on me. Alan even invited me to dinner one night, when we talked about his experiences. I couldn't help but notice a deep sadness in his eyes, which mirrored something I had seen in the eyes of so many others during my dalliance with his ministry. I quickly realized I did not want that sort of future for myself.

8th-Jun-2005 05:53 pm (UTC)
Being seductive is how cults recruit. All of their stabs at "reparative therapy" are empty pipe dreams rooted in flawed, circular logic at best. I'm glad you saw the light - the one you can prove exists.

I love your rants! I'd like to invite you to join gsa_lj if you would be so inclined. As a community for gay youth and straight allies, gsa_lj reaches a lot of queer and questioning youth who are from rural and isolated areas, as well as a lot of representatives of gay youth organizations from high schools and universities. I copied your Pride Month icons post there, and I'm going to copy this post there as well.

I...am not sure what the purpose of the links to all of those hate-filled sites is. I fully support gay equality, fully, and you do too, right? So, I'm a bit confused why you're linking to places like godhatesfags. Please, enlighten me.

Thanks! The CC might want to reconsider a few things, particularly in light of John Paul II and the new Pope Palpatine's derisive opinions about homosexuals. As far as I'm concerned, the CC has no right to say anything considering the amount of raping, pillaging, and enabling it has done. I could go on and on about the CC, but I already have a bit of a headache.

And no, you might never see a member of the Catholic hierarchy with a "God Hates Fags" banner. You might see them looking the other way when an alter boy is shaking his little ass lasciviously at a priest, though. Especially if your name is Cardinal Bernard Law.
