I was reading Foxnews.com this morning and I ran across something so wholly inappropriate that I couldn't believe it. It is one of the most unbelievable things I've ever seen - and then I remembered it was Fox, afterall. You have to see it to believe it - therefore, I give you:

Is this not in the worst possible taste? My mouth just fell open and my eyes were all big and I asked Maggie "Do you SEE this?" She couldn't believe it either. What the hell? Was this some kind of racist prank disguised as an innocent mistake? It is so outrageous that things like this can be shown to the public before anyone takes notice. This is the height of stupidity and I'm seriously offended. What's next? "Palestinians to Ariel Sharon: 'Pipe down, ya dirty Heeb!'"???

Someone at Foxnews.com is gonna get their ass kicked...

I'm confused...

The term "spook" is a very derogatory word in reference to African American people. It is very close to the "N" word I hate so much.

i understand the degratory reference, but is it not also in reference to REALLY undercover agents, sort of x-files sort of stuff?

That's how I took it. But I suppose it's because the word (in its derogatory sense) doesn't apply to me. It does apply to african-americans though. Now that I know that, I can see what an outrage it is. Same thing with the word faggot. It's literal meaning is a bundle of wood or a cigarette. But because it's used in a derogatory way toward homosexual men, I find the word highly offensive.

Of course... it's just a word.

sure, sticks and stones and all that crap. i used to get chased home by boys calling me horny toad, and scag and geek, when i was an elementary school. just words, but lemme tell ya... i can appreciate being called names, oh yes i can.

oh. and they did throw rocks. so that sucked. cuz i can also appreciate being stoned, by rocks, i mean. that sucks too.

it's REALLY bad taste, that headline. i'm looking for it now, to try to find the reference, they may have pulled it.

no, no they did not. should it to jeff, and he mentioned that it's also used to describe 'spy'. bad taste for the double entrende, intended or not.

Funny how we live in a world where every word you say has to be very carefully considered to avoid offending someone. In a few years it'll be nearly impossible to carry on a conversation without offending somebody.

hey! You're offending me by talking about offending people. Now stop that!

it was a poor usage of the word - but if you look at the context, it's not used that way

"spook" also denotes a spy - in this case the UK was being referred to as a spook.

now, if they'd broken into pure Uncle Remus and said "Oooh Massuh! Massuh! Dems' a big ole pickaninny!" that would be insensitive and hateful.

Some people are defending "spook" by saying they meant "spy," but seriously, they could have come up with a way better title/subtitle than THAT.

I feel sorry for that intern. They just need people who double-check. Not all of us are versed in derogatory terms. The kid who put it up the video has probably been to more spy movies than klan meetings and didn't know. Perhaps he used the Meriam Webster site for synonyms. I've lived in the deep south for almost 21 years and hadn't heard the term used that way before (either way). But I guess I will never be responsible for putting up content on the FoxNews site, either... When I went and looked at the site a few hours ago, it was gone, so I guess someone realized.
