'Bout Time, Let's Hope This Starts A Trend & Sets A Standard!

Disowning Conservative Politics, Evangelical Pastor Rattles Flock

MAPLEWOOD, Minn. Like most pastors who lead thriving evangelical megachurches, the Rev. Gregory A. Boyd was asked frequently to give his blessing and the churchs to conservative political candidates and causes.

The requests came from church members and visitors alike: Would he please announce a rally against gay marriage during services? Would he introduce a politician from the pulpit? Could members set up a table in the lobby promoting their anti-abortion work? Would the church distribute voters guides that all but endorsed Republican candidates? And with the country at war, please couldnt the church hang an American flag in the sanctuary?

After refusing each time, Mr. Boyd finally became fed up, he said. Before the last presidential election, he preached six sermons called The Cross and the Sword in which he said the church should steer clear of politics, give up moralizing on sexual issues, stop claiming the United States as a Christian nation and stop glorifying American military campaigns.

When the church wins the culture wars, it inevitably loses, Mr. Boyd preached. When it conquers the world, it becomes the world. When you put your trust in the sword, you lose the cross.

Mr. Boyd says he is no liberal. He is opposed to abortion and thinks homosexuality is not Gods ideal. The response from his congregation at Woodland Hills Church here in suburban St. Paul packed mostly with politically and theologically conservative, middle-class evangelicals was passionate. Some members walked out of a sermon and never returned. By the time the dust had settled, Woodland Hills, which Mr. Boyd founded in 1992, had lost about 1,000 of its 5,000 members.

But there were also congregants who thanked Mr. Boyd, telling him they were moved to tears to hear him voice concerns they had been too afraid to share.

Most of my friends are believers, said Shannon Staiger, a psychotherapist and church member, and they think if youre a believer, youll vote for Bush. And its scary to go against that.

Oh, Michelle - You Insipid Fleshbag...

I really hate Michelle Malkin. Not because of the obvious reasons, (Republican, Nazi sympathizer, praises interment camps forWWII Japanese Americans, fucking racist, general cuntliness) or rather not JUST because of them - but because of shit like this. Again, here's another shrill Republican going on and on about how Muslims are inherently violent, blah blah blah. I don't have just a simple problem with the issue of such sweeping generalizations or grand indictments of an entire group, it's the fact that she (like her contemporaries) are so quick to jump on the bandwagons espousing blatant racism (and the more insidious closet racism) and anti-Muslim sentiment. It's all pro-war rhetoric when you get down to it and the neocons are all madly in love with Dubya all over again, inching us toward WWIII by the second. None of that is even my biggest bitch right now. Wanna know what is?

The 'murderous Muslim' that shot up the Jewish Center in Seattle, killing 1 and wounding 6 others was NOT a Muslim extremist as Malkin and others are claiming - he's a fundamentalist Christian. Not that it really matters for their purpose, all that matters is that he's brown.

Moussaoui Trial Transcripts Made Available Online

Court posts 9/11 trial exhibits online
ALEXANDRIA, Virginia (AP) -- Exhibits from the trial of convicted terrorist Zacarias Moussaoui, including photographs of September 11 carnage and tape-recorded final phone calls from World Trade Center victims, were posted Monday by a federal court.

The U.S. District Court in Alexandria, Virginia, said it is the first criminal case for which a federal court has provided access to all exhibits online.

The videos, photographs and taped phone calls on the court's Web site were graphic in some cases, leading the court to mark 18 of the 1,202 exhibits "discretion advised."

WARNING: some of these images are very graphic & very disturbing

I don't reccommend viewing the images in the prosecution's section of exhibits, some of the images of burned bodies & human remains are more than a lot of people could take given the weight of emotion associated with 9/11. I'm not advocating that anyone view these images (denoted with a "[Viewer discretion is advised]" warning on the link), I'm simply offering the link in the event anyone wishes to see. For my part, I have to see these things on occaision just to keep it all from becoming too surreal in my mind.
