Goodbye, Toot...
3rd-Nov-2008 04:50 pm

Sen. Barack Obama’s grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, has died after a battle with cancer, his campaign office says.
A statement from Barack Obama and Maya Soetoro-Ng on their grandmother's death:

"It is with great sadness that we announce that our grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, has died peacefully after a battle with cancer. She was the cornerstone of our family, and a woman of extraordinary accomplishment, strength, and humility. She was the person who encouraged and allowed us to take chances. She was proud of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and left this world with the knowledge that her impact on all of us was meaningful and enduring. Our debt to her is beyond measure.

"Our family wants to thank all of those who sent flowers, cards, well-wishes, and prayers during this difficult time. It brought our grandmother and us great comfort. Our grandmother was a private woman, and we will respect her wish for a small private ceremony to be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you make a donation to any worthy organization in search of a cure for cancer."

What a shame, what an awful shame that she couldn't hang on just a day or two more - but I'm glad she's not suffering anymore.

OMG, right before election day on top of all! Life is so unfair!

It's good that at least he managed to say goodbye to her.

Like so many others, I am deeply saddened by this news, especially coming hours before the votes in this election are counted.

I'm glad that Senator Obama was able to see her in those last days before her passing, and that she is now at rest.

Most of all, this gives me renewed determination to do everything I can to make sure that Madelyn Payne Dunham's grandson is not cheated in this election, along with the rest of America.

I'm so sorry to see her go now. I've watched my nephew with my mother, who's been more of a mother to him than the woman who gave birth to him, and I've seen how deep the love between a grandparent and grandchild can be. I can just imagine the pain Barack Obama is feeling now. He's lost a woman who represented unconditional love and support, as well as strength, intelligence and integrity.

He gave a beautiful speech tonight, and was as eloquent as ever, but there's a lost little boy at this moment whose heart is broken, because "Tut" is gone for good. He'll remember her, and he'll pass his memories on to his daughters, but there's going to be a hole in his heart where she used to be.

Of all the pictures I've seen of Barack Obama, this one caused me to burst into tears:

I was brought to tears when I saw this post. I too, lost my mother to cancer, my grandmother and both died in my arms. I know the pain he feels right now. On top of the loss he must also feel a little cheated that they both could not be her to see him take the oath of office in January. Yes, I do think he will win tomorrow!

She raised a fine man who I am counting on to give us back the hopes and dreams that we have been longing for in this country. I think his Grandma "Toots" did a wonderful job and I honestly think she left this world knowing he would go on to achieve great things.

What a loss for Obama and his family.

Ugh, I can't stand how this makes me sad for him. She did what she was put on this earth to do: be a rock for this family. Perhaps she felt her job was done and she did not feel she had to hang on. Perhaps she knows something already that we don't know? ???
