HHS Moves to Define Contraception as Abortion
SOURCE: http://www.rhrealitycheck.org/blog/2008/07/15/hhs-moves-define-contraception-abortion
In a spectacular act of complicity with the religious right, the Department of Health and Human Services Monday released a proposal that allows any federal grant recipient to obstruct a woman's access to contraception. In order to do this, the Department is attempting to redefine many forms of contraception, the birth control 40% of Americans use, as abortion. Doing so protects extremists under the Weldon and Church amendments. Those laws prohibit federal grant recipients from requiring employees to help provide or refer for abortion services.

The Religious-Right-run US Department of Health and Human Services is redefining contraception as abortion, in order to make it harder -- or impossible -- for women to avoid pregnancy. They're doing this by claiming -- without any evidence -- that hormonal contraception acts to prevent implantation of a fertilized egg in the womb, and they're defining "prevention of implantation" as abortion because they're defining "the beginning of human life" as fertilization.

Feministing has plenty to say about this:
You might think Bush has done all the damage he possibly can to reproductive rights. But he's not done yet:
The Bush administration wants to require all recipients of aid under federal health programs to certify that they will not refuse to hire nurses and other providers who object to abortion and even certain types of birth control.

Under the draft of a proposed rule, hospitals, clinics, researchers and medical schools would have to sign "written certifications" as a prerequisite to getting money under any program run by the Department of Health and Human Services.
The rule defines "abortion" so broadly that it could also apply to birth control pills and emergency contraception. And because the rule would apply to federal health programs, low-income and uninsured women will be most affected....
Read her full post here, she has lots more to say on the subject and has more links.
What the fuck has happened to this country that we've allowed this kind of regressive bullshit - are we more collectively stupid than I thought?

I wonder how many are aligned with these dumbasses.

Um...how about no? Did they even bother to study the many other theraputic uses of contraception such as preventing cancer in women with various reproductive diseases and syndromes?

You can't abort what isn't there. 10% of women in the US have polycystic ovarian syndrome. That means their bodies are already self-aborting; the eggs released turn into cysts which have the potential to turn into cancer or other equally life threatening medical issues...unless you use contraception. The contraceptives stop that process and ensure that the reproductive organs clean themselves out.

It won't even accomplish what they want it to. You'll just see an increase in midwives who also know the herbal remedies for birth control and abortion. You'll see a rise in back street abortion clinics and you'll see a dramatic increase in the deaths of women of childbearing age.

Well-said. Thank you.

Seconding this.

I'm pretty sure every time a woman menstruates she's killing a baby. Every time a guy jerks off, that's like 20 million dead right there. Each one of those sperm is a potential child! Oh the humanity!
16th-Jul-2008 04:51 pm (UTC)
We're all fucking mass murderers by that standard! Hell, even those of us guys who DON'T have sex with women are baby killers.

I still don't get how this could even pass muster considering that until there's a viable fetus impregnated in a womb, the option to carry or abort doesn't even exist. It's like the concept of the Spielberg film Minority Report, where you're arrested on what you WILL do as opposed to what you MIGHT do. Even with the possible variables, it's essentially that.

I think I have a nosebleed.

Sorry, America, you can no longer jack off. Yep, that's right, it's a form of abortion. Sucks to be you.

What's next?

Him: Honey, let's have sex right now.
Her: Sorry, I have a headache.
Him: You're refusing to have sex with me?
Her: Um, yeah, get over it.
Him: But, that's abortion!

That's how stupid this proposal is.

whoa! wtf?

Now what about those of us with total ovarian failier and pollycystic ovaries?
16th-Jul-2008 06:28 pm (UTC)
For serious. Hopefully we don't end up in jail together, all of us not having periods together ... >:O Oh right, that probably means God is punishing us. We must be sinners.
16th-Jul-2008 08:28 pm (UTC)
Right? And here all along I thought just not being able to have a child was punishment enough.

This is flipping crazy!

For serious.

While I don't agree with this step but if those aligned with the Catholic view of birth control, then yes, contraception devices would be considered a form of abortion.

How sad.

It makes me sad that these people can't put a little more effort into things like Darfur and AIDS and a little less effort into something so ...
16th-Jul-2008 06:32 pm (UTC)
OK, sorry for my 4th comment here already, but they already make those of us who need it just to OVULATE PAY for our damned contraceptives -- isn't that enough? Now we're baby killers because we want to try to be able to conceive?!

The most mind blowing part of this is that it's such a small fuck group that believes this idiocy. Does this administration go out of it's WAY to find the craziest extreme fuckers to pander to? They can't be THAT large of a voting force. Granted, the saner part of the country for the most part has their heads so far up their asses they only can watch the latest celeb gossip. Ugh, I lose my faith in humanity a little more each day.

What do you think? See inaccuracies I need to correct?
17th-Jul-2008 12:59 am (UTC) - suckage

Total complete suckage.
There is zero scientific evidence that the Pill prevents implantation or that the Pill aborts before implantation.

The stupid, it burns.
I wrote my letter of protest.

It's bad enough that teenage girls and impoverished women are popping out babies like daisies out of the ground, but we're also going to be on the same level as the Philippines. Nice.

Oy...that would be really bad for me. I am sexually active (and eatingly active, and all other kinds of active.)

but...I also get migrane headaches without birth control, because my body really doesn't like the changes in hormone levels...and I take birth control to regulate that.

I had heard of a bill like this in CO..and I am outraged. Can you promote this to a Rat Bastard Friday for me?
