Is homophobia associated with homosexual arousal?
Adams HE, Wright LW Jr, Lohr BA.

Department of Psychology, University of Georgia, Athens 30602-3013, USA.

The authors investigated the role of homosexual arousal in exclusively heterosexual men who admitted negative affect toward homosexual individuals. Participants consisted of a group of homophobic men (n = 35) and a group of nonhomophobic men (n = 29); they were assigned to groups on the basis of their scores on the Index of Homophobia (W. W. Hudson & W. A. Ricketts, 1980). The men were exposed to sexually explicit erotic stimuli consisting of heterosexual, male homosexual, and lesbian videotapes, and changes in penile circumference were monitored. They also completed an Aggression Questionnaire (A. H. Buss & M. Perry, 1992). Both groups exhibited increases in penile circumference to the heterosexual and female homosexual videos. Only the homophobic men showed an increase in penile erection to male homosexual stimuli. The groups did not differ in aggression. Homophobia is apparently associated with homosexual arousal that the homophobic individual is either unaware of or denies.
Hands up - who's surprised? Every time I see some asshole spewing anti-gay bullshit, I always think "Get over yourself - you know you want the noodle..." - and now I have the data to back it up.

I know - pretty cool, huh?

Do me a favor when you get a minute and explain this to me in lay terms, please. I'm sure that for certain academics it's perfectly understandable, but I'm neither caffeinated sufficiently or properly versed in this terminology enough for it to make clear sense to me.

It reminds me of the little girl who punches the little boy in the arm all the time on the playground. She's interested but wont' say so. Very curious...

Whats nice about this is I think the LW Wright listed as one of the co authors is in fact Les Wright who authored the book
" The Bear Book - Readings in the History and Evolution of a Gay Male Subculture". He's one of us.

And - who says the article is hard to understand? Honestly - the abstract will tell you everything you need to know - the actual paper will go into greater depth - talking about how they picked their sample population, what kind of instruments (surveys perhaps) they used and how they analyzed their data. The article will go into detail step by step how they conducted their research and why you should consider their findings valid.

Now I'll be really impressed with the studying how the University of Georgia causes homophobia ;)

I'm kind of skeptical of this.

I LOVED introducing this study to my class when I taught Stereotyping and Prejudice. It has its weaknessness, like any social scientific study (or any study for that matter), but for being done such a relatively long time ago, there's not a lot of current research using similar methodologies. I wonder why that is. My guess would be many IRBs (Institutional Review Boards) deem messing with guys junk ethically questionable. Of course, many of the devices are self-applicable. Either way, it's HOT. Penises rock <3

First off - LOVE LOVE LOVE the saucy photo of you!

Hands DOWN! I am not shocked by this news in the least. I had my own theories about this.

But why would only those having strong negative attitudes towards homosexuality have the increased display? This isn't just a correlation. This study demonstrates that compared to heterosexual males who do not harbor negative attitudes about homosexuality, those that do harbor negative attitudes get bigger boners.

If it were just stimuli then there should be no difference.

Is this something new? I remember hearing about this (or something virtually identical) around 5 years ago or so.

For people who want to read the full article, here you go.

This is my shocked face. No really.

Studies have proven this in the past, too, but naturally homophobes just pretend it is some sort of evil persecution from the "gay activists" to condemn them and destroy their religious liberty.

Awesome! Thanks for posting this. I can't wait to add it to my ammo.
