Pope's exorcist squads will wage war on Satan
The Pope has ordered his bishops to set up exorcism squads to tackle the rise of Satanism.

Vatican chiefs are concerned at what they see as an increased interest in the occult.

They have introduced courses for priests to combat what they call the most extreme form of "Godlessness."

Each bishop is to be told to have in his diocese a number of priests trained to fight demonic possession.

The initiative was revealed by 82-year-old Father Gabriele Amorth, the Vatican "exorcistinchief," to the online Catholic news service Petrus.

"Thanks be to God, we have a Pope who has decided to fight the Devil head-on," he said.

"Too many bishops are not taking this seriously and are not delegating their priests in the fight against the Devil. You have to hunt high and low for a properly trained exorcist.

"Thankfully, Benedict XVI believes in the existence and danger of evil - going back to the time he was in charge of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith." The CDF is the oldest Vatican department and was headed by Benedict from 1982, when he was Cardinal Ratzinger, until he became Pope in 2005.

Father Amorth said that during his time at the department Benedict had not lost the chance to warn humanity of the risk from the Devil.

He said the Pope wants to restore a prayer seen as protection against evil that was traditionally recited at the end of Catholic Masses. The prayer, to St Michael the Archangel, was dropped in the 1960s by Pope John XXIII.

*at first i wasn't going to go there, then i thought "f*ck it!"*

it's interesting that pope scary-looking-guy is waging a war on satan since (especially in the picture accompanying your post) he kinda looks like he's possessed by satan

I can't help but be amused that in most pictures he looks an awful lot like Danny Devito in his makeup from Batman Returns.....with a big, sparkly plug on his head.

Yeah - saw this as well.

Here's an idea: if you plan on calling a war on Satan - how about at least *trying* to use a picture where you *don't* look like Satan?

Well, I'll certainly sleep better tonight, secure in the knowledge that the elected representative of fictional deity #1 is declaring war on the agents of fictional deity #2. Whew, that's a load off.

nice to see he hasn't forgotten his Hitler Youth wave.

Ya know, if we're talkin' like Constantine demon slayers... I'm all for it.

But if we're talking witch-hunt-inquisition against pagans... he can go fuck himself.

If you had such a devout belief in Good and Evil, vis-a-vis Heaven and Hell, I suppose your average, ordinary, every-day Pope might do this. Sometimes, I don't think even the highest ranks in organized religion KNOW what motivates their beliefs. Which is frightening.

As I read Marianne Williamson's "A Return To Love", it helped reframe for me much of what I already thought about the Judeo-Christian belief system, concepts reframed in a context that was psychological and emotional in nature. God, Jesus... they're all merely symbols for the roots of the spiritual presence in us. We're just too damned busy using our intellects, too constrained by our own biology and neurochemistry, to stop and actually THINK about what all this really means.

Fred Phelps and his congregants can protest all the funerals they want. They're no closer to "God" (love) or "Jesus" (enlightenment) than any spite-filled devil-worshiper (who, in actuality, may be closer to love and enlightenment, but just very ego-injured and compelled to act out in a seemingly negative and unappealing manner what he simply cannot articulate).

Ya know, I don't think he's REALLY trying to exorcise evil. More like repress, crush, or totally annihilate the resistance, and show the TRUE power of the fully operational Death Star!

*he can FEEL your anger, young Skywalker!*

Ok... 2 things: one - the concept of exorcist squads creeps me out... it reminds of of the scene in Saved! where Hilary Faye drags Mary into the van and performs the exorcism on her... creepy. Two - That photo... Evile, the man looks sinister... how can you follow a man that looks like a lecherous step uncle?
