Tragedy has struck.

After over a year of fighting, America has had its first, true casulty as a result of the Iraqi war.

We've lost a football player.

True, we've had other losses. But what are the lives of hundreds of young men and women when compared to a single football player?

I ask you all to join me in a moment of silence for our fallen countryman.

Just as long as I don't die in the war, I'll be happy.

You know, I love you Neil. I just do.

Amen. Unfortunately, it takes someone in a public remarkable position to drive home the reality of situations such as this. We are so desensitized to "war" because we see the news recaps of it three times a day and that's that. Aside from 9/11, the collective American "we" don't have the first clue what may be happening elsewhere. The news reports how many American casualties at least 2-3 times per newscast. When was the last time you heard them mention how many non-Americans had been killed?

Every life lost in this lie of a war is a life. Every man or woman, every child meant something to someone, if not to the journalists who write the evening news.

I'm sad that Tillman was killed, but no more or less so than I am sad at the hundreds of others who have died, or the thousands who died on 9/11, or at the embassy in Saudi Arabia a few years ago...or, or or...

Michael, I think I love you too. Almost every post you make brings a smile to my face, and I'm glad I have befriended you. Someday soon we'll meet face to face and I'll get to give you a big bear hug.

I'll hold you to that!

I have a bearhug registry, you know.

In honor of this fallen comrade I will abstain from playing football.

Wait.

I didn't play football in the first place. But I guess the thought counts.

Precisely my point!

That's rather a low blow. The media has been all over any incident it can grub at -- Jessica Powell (nevermind that people died next to her when she was captured) or the contractors being barbecued or the helicoptor going down or the three Wisconsin sisters who were in the army and one of them died. Not to mention that there are people clamoring at every casualty to bring our troops home. Or that a major news spent the time to read out the name of every single casualty.

Of course the media has to turn it into a big circus. Yum yum yum. Lesson here: The media are jerkfaces. Oh wait, we already knew that. Any story they can spin with the most sentimental value at any point is going to be the one they push. Right now, it's him. But soon it will wear off and they'll be onto someone else.

So why are you acting like this is the only thing (first, true casualty) they've crawled all over like maggots?

I agree with you on most every point you made, however the last one presumes a great deal. Particularly since you don't know me or how I'm "acting" in this instance in regard to Pat Tillman.

Oh, I'm sorry! This is just a copy paste of a comment I made on the original post of this over at cmorley. So yes, the you in this case refers to him, hehe.

Gotcha - no worries!
29th-Apr-2004 05:24 pm (UTC) - fallen football star...
I can understand your disdain for this news coverage that Tillman's death is has received and still is receiving. It is as to say that if someone were to pass up 5 million dollars that they are some how a better individual for giving their life for freedom... What happened is a tragedy as it should be whenever one of our soldiers falls in action where ever in the world.

I don't think that they are celebrating signifigance... just celebrity.
