The House of Representatives passed health-reform legislation that included an anti-choice amendment that will seriously jeopardize women’s access to abortion – making it virtually impossible for private insurance companies that participate in the new health system to offer abortion coverage to women.

This would have the effect of denying women the right to use their own personal, private funds to purchase an insurance plan with abortion coverage in the new health system.

We must stop health-care reform from being enacted with this ban!

Sign our petition calling on Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to stand firm against a ban on abortion coverage for women in the new health system.

Uuuugh, the Stupid-Pricks Stupak-Pitts amendment. While, personally, I would like to see all elective treatments, i.e. not medically necessary pared down - whether it's abortion, fertility treatments or speech therapy1 - this recent move reeks of sexism and misogyny.

When will we find a way to STOP special interests from using unrelated bills to further their own agendas, in this case, as Latoya puts it, "(using) health care reform as a weapon for their pet issue" 2

At this point, if I was a congresscritter I wouldn't know what do - vote against the bill out of principle, or send it on and try to fix the problems later. Both are very difficult options. Sad to see it's come down to that. It's also discomforting to know that these things tend to be forgotten by the time primaries come around.
