Despite Failure To Meet Bush’s Original Goals, McCain And Lieberman Declare ‘The Surge Worked’
One year ago today, in an address to the nation, President Bush announced his new “surge” strategy for Iraq. In his speech, Bush said that the goal of the “surge” was to improve security in order to give the Iraqi government “the breathing space it needs” to “make reconciliation possible.”

Though violence in Iraq has diminished in the tail end of 2007, these “fragile” security gains have not been accompanied by sufficient “progress on any of the key political benchmarks so critical to bringing Iraq together.” In fact, as we enter 2008, Iraq is “even more bitterly divided along ethnic and sectarian lines than it was at the start of 2007.”

Despite the failure of the surge to meet its political goals, war hawks are rushing to declare victory. Writing in the Wall Street Journal today, Sens. John McCain (R-AZ) and Joe Lieberman (I-CT) declare that “the surge worked.”

Here are a few examples of how their claims of “victory” do not correspond with the reality in Iraq... [More]

To be fair, the Bush quotation says the goal was to provide breathing space, and it has, only recently. So . . . it would seem that even Bush's vision was for the reconciliation to start now, not before.

To me the whole debate is irrelevant, however. We all know that if we put an American soldier on every streetcorner Iraq will become more secure. The point is that we cannot sustain that, nor is it in our interest to do so.

"You break it, you own it," yes, but there is nothing wrong with ceding control to the U.N.--except to Bush's fragile ego, which is the only thing our soldiers continue dying for.

i'm thinking it's the 'GETTHEFUCKOUTTAHERE!' conversation in Beverly Hills Cop... seems like a fair enough response to "hey, lookie, the surge is a success!"

It's a picture of him from when he played "Serge" in BHC. In this photo, he's at work in an art gallery. IE = The Serge is working.

My friend was telling me about a news report she read or saw about snowing in Baghdad (spelling is not my friend, maybe?), and that the artillery that was usually shot into the Green Zone was suspended during the snow. She said it was a brief reference, but pointed out if the surge was working so well, why would there be anything to stop at all?
